Jaipur: Facing an acute shortage of traffic personnel amid rapid urban expansion, the Jaipur Police Commissionerate has proposed the introduction of Traffic Marshals on the lines of the Delhi model to improve traffic management across the city. A detailed proposal outlining the recruitment, selection and deployment process has been sent to the state government for approval.
Over the past fifteen years, Jaipur’s population has grown manifold, but the strength of traffic police has failed to keep pace. As a result, traffic congestion—especially during peak hours—has become a daily challenge, with existing measures yielding limited success.
Manpower Crunch Prompts New Model
Currently, Jaipur Police relies on volunteer traffic wardens, who assist in managing traffic without any honorarium. However, their limited numbers and availability have reduced the effectiveness of this arrangement. To address this gap, Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal has proposed the recruitment of paid Traffic Marshals to provide structured and accountable support to traffic police personnel.
₹6,000 Honorarium for Four-Hour Duty
According to the proposal, Traffic Marshals will receive a monthly honorarium of ₹6,000 for performing four hours of duty per day. Their deployment will be focused on congestion-prone areas during peak hours, where local participation is expected to help manage traffic flow more efficiently and reduce recurring jams.
Eligibility and Selection Process
The proposal lays down clear eligibility criteria:
- Minimum educational qualification: Class 10 pass
- Valid driving licence mandatory
- Character verification certificate required
- Selection to be conducted through interviews
Once selected, Traffic Marshals will undergo training in traffic rules and road safety protocols. During duty, they will wear official jackets and caps, similar to those worn by traffic police personnel, to ensure visibility and authority.
Strict Supervision Mechanism
To maintain discipline and accountability, an officer of ACP rank will be appointed as the nodal officer to supervise the Traffic Marshals. Their performance and conduct will be regularly monitored to ensure effective implementation of the system.
Expected Benefits
If approved, the initiative is expected to:
- Reduce traffic congestion during peak hours
- Strengthen on-ground traffic management
- Improve coordination between citizens and police
- Provide employment opportunities to local residents
Senior police officials believe that adopting the Delhi model could significantly improve Jaipur’s traffic scenario, which has been under mounting pressure due to increasing vehicles and inadequate manpower.
The proposal now awaits the state government’s clearance, after which the recruitment process could begin.
