In a tragic incident highlighting the devastating emotional toll of personal betrayal, a young lawyer in Gwalior allegedly died by suicide after witnessing his girlfriend—an Sub-Inspector (SI) posted in Morena—with another man just days before their scheduled wedding.
The incident occurred in the Gola Ka Mandir police station area, where the deceased, identified as Mrityunjay Chauhan, was living in a rented house in the Adarsh Puram locality. According to family members, Chauhan had been in a relationship with the woman for nearly five years, and their marriage was fixed for December 30.
Alleged Betrayal Led to Severe Depression
Chauhan’s mother, Shivkumari, alleged that on Friday he saw his girlfriend in a room with another constable. Following the incident, a heated argument reportedly took place between the couple. Family members said Chauhan slipped into deep depression thereafter, unable to cope with the emotional shock.
Despite repeated efforts by his mother to console him, his mental condition reportedly deteriorated. Concerned about her son’s state of mind, Shivkumari travelled from Vijaypur to Gwalior on Monday to meet him, only to be confronted with the devastating outcome.
Friend Alerts Family
The matter came to light when Chauhan’s friend contacted his sister, Poonam Chauhan, informing her that he was not responding to phone calls. When she, along with the friend, reached the house, they found it locked from inside. On entering through the roof, they discovered Chauhan hanging.
The police were immediately informed. Officers reached the spot, conducted preliminary investigation, and sent the body for post-mortem examination. An inquiry into the circumstances leading to the suicide is currently underway.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Mrityunjay Chauhan was a practicing lawyer in Gwalior and was also pursuing a PhD. Family members described him as hardworking and academically inclined, with a promising future ahead.
In what now appears to be a haunting prelude to the tragedy, Chauhan had recently posted a photograph with his girlfriend on social media with the caption: “There is no liberation in love, only death.” The woman had reportedly commented “Bless” on the post.
Police Investigation Ongoing
Police officials stated that all aspects of the case are being examined, including statements from family members and acquaintances. While no formal allegations have been registered against any individual so far, investigators are probing whether any factors beyond emotional distress played a role.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local legal fraternity and raised renewed concerns about mental health, emotional trauma, and the need for timely psychological support in cases of severe personal distress.
