New Delhi: The survivor of the Unnao rape case expressed deep anguish following the Delhi High Court’s suspension of the life imprisonment sentence of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. She described the court’s decision as a “death sentence” for her family, saying that her fear has intensified and, for her safety, she would rather be sent to jail herself if the accused is released.
Speaking to the media, the survivor said, “If the accused is being released, then for my protection, I should be sent to jail. This is the first instance in the country where a stay has been granted on the sentence in a rape case, and bail has been allowed. All daughters in this country are now afraid that if such orders continue, perpetrators may go unpunished.”
Family Voices Distress
The survivor’s mother also voiced her anger, saying that justice can only be served if Sengar’s bail is revoked. She warned that otherwise, they fear for their lives. “We are not safe. We will approach the Supreme Court to ensure justice,” she said. She highlighted that the family has been confined to their homes and restricted from coming within 5 km of certain areas, adding to their sense of insecurity.
Political Leaders React
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised concerns over the treatment of the survivor, asking, “Is it appropriate for a gangrape survivor to face such treatment? Is it her ‘fault’ that she is courageous enough to raise her voice for justice?”
The CBI, after studying the Delhi High Court division bench’s order granting bail, has decided to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court, aiming to secure justice for the survivor and her family.
